This Day in Military History
6 June 1944: Operation Overlord—the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France began. Commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the U.S.-led invasion—the biggest amphibious assault in history—opened the long-awaited western front against Adolf Hitler’s so-called “Fortress Europe.” Within eleven months, allied forces converging on Germany from both west and east brought about the Nazi surrender.
Quote of the Day: “If we are about to be captured, I’ll shoot you first. After all, I am your commanding officer.” William “Wild Bill” Donovan, on Utah Beach to a subordinate, June 7, 1944
