June 5, 1794: The first officers of the U.S. Navy under the new U.S. Constitution were appointed: John Barry, Samuel Nicholson, Silas Talbot, Joshua Barney, Richard Dale, and Thomas Truxtun. They were also asked to supervise the construction of new ships.
