This Day in Military History

May 30, 1943: U.S. troops retook Kiska and Attu islands from occupying Japanese troops. The battle to retake these Aleutian Islands began on May 11. The 7th Infantry faced dug-in Japanese, who made a desperate banzai final counter-attack. This was the only land battle of World War II fought on U.S. soil.
