This Day in American Military History

19 September 1777: The first battle of Saratoga ended in an American victory. With their control of Manhattan, Newport, Rhode Island, and Canada, British victory in the Revolutionary War seemed imminent—until U.S. forces stopped a British attempt to invade upstate New York. A second battle soon began (October 17) that would convince France to enter the war on America’s side.
