20 July 1960: The first launch of a Polaris missile occurred when the submarine George Washington fired two missiles while submerged off Florida. President Dwight Eisenhower received this message from the submarine’s command: “POLARIS – FROM OUT OF THE DEEP TO TARGET. PERFECT.”
