This Day in Military History

23 May 1900: Former slave William H. Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions while wounded at the assault on Fort Wagner at Charleston, South Carolina, on July 18, 1863. His actions made him the first African-American soldier to be given the Medal of Honor, although he was the last of his Civil War comrades to receive it.
