1965: The U.S. Navy’s Operation Market Time began. It was an effort to interrupt communist supply lines along river and coastal routes. The strategy led to the Navy’s request for Coast Guard vessels and crews to participate in patrols during the Vietnam War.

1975: The seventh and final draft lottery was held. Had the draft been in effect, men born in 1956 would have been called to report for induction the following year.
