March 1, 1912: The first parachute jump from an airplane was made, when Captain Albert Berry jumped from an airplane over Jefferson Barracks Army Base, Missouri, at an altitude of 1,500 feet. His parachute—36 feet in diameter—was contained in a metal canister attached to the underside of the plane, and when Berry fell, his weight pulled the parachute from the canister.

Quote of the Day: “Never again!” Albert Berry, on whether he’d parachute again. His resolve held until March 10, 1912, when he jumped again.
