14 July 1813: Lt. John M. Gamble, the first U.S. Marine to command a U.S. Navy ship, made a valuable capture during the War of 1812. On the Greenwich, he captured the formidable British whaling ship Seringapatam, a victory made sweeter because the larger Seringapatam had more crew and guns.
