This Day in Military History

24 June 1950: President Harry Truman was informed by Secretary of State Dean Acheson that North Korea had invaded South Korea (it was June 25 in Korea itself). Five days later, the president ordered U.S. forces to respond. America, he said, would contain communism.

Quote of the Day: “I’m writing in a hurry: I see death coming up the hill.” – U.S. soldier during the Battle of Hamburger Hill
