24 September 1918: Lt. j.g. David S. Ingalls became the U.S. Navy’s first ace. During a test flight in a Sopwith Camel, he spotted an enemy plane over Nieuport, Belgium, and, with another Sopwith Camel, attacked and scored his fifth aerial victory.
