28 September 1781: The final battle of the Revolutionary War—Yorktown—began. General George Washington’s forces, linked up with French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, surrounded the British troops of Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis in the Virginia city (October 19).
