This Day in American Military History

27 September 1991: With the Cold War over, President George H.W. Bush ended the Strategic Air Command’s alert force operation, which had been operating since October 1957. This resulted in the Pentagon taking B-52 bombers off their full-time alert. The president also ordered some 2,400 short-range land and sea-based nuclear weapons eliminated, a move he said could save $2 billion a year.
