This Day in Military History

25 June 2019: David Bellavia became the only living Iraq War veteran to receive the Medal of Honor. Bellavia, an Army staff sergeant in 2004, was fighting in Operation Phantom Fury, commonly known as the Second Battle of Fallujah, which included scores of close-quarters gun battles in house-to-house fighting. A review previously awarded Army Staff Sgt. Travis Atkins a posthumous Medal of Honor for his service in Iraq.

Quote of the Day: “There are only so many Knute Rockne pep talks you can give when you’re stacked eight to a man in a Bradley.”  – Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, Medal of Honor recipient, on the eve of the Second Battle of Fallujah, in Eyewitness to War, Volume II
