This Day in Military History

April 21, 1898: The Spanish-American War began. The United States declared war on April 25 but made it retroactive to April 21, when President William McKinley ordered the U.S. Navy to begin a blockade of Cuba and Spain.

Quote of the Day: “Whenever I have been in a difficult situation, or in the midst of such a confusion of details that the simple and right thing to do seemed hazy, I have often asked myself, ‘What would Farragut do?’”

Admiral George Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War
