This Day in Military History
April 18, 1847: In one of the bloodiest battles of the Mexican-American War, U.S. forces under Winfield Scott defeated the Mexicans at the mountain pass of Cerro Gordo, near Xalapa, Veracruz. More than 1,000 Mexicans were killed and another 3,000 were captured. Making fruitful reconnaissance for the United States was young captain Robert E. Lee.
