This Day in American Military History

9 September 1863: Union forces captured Chattanooga, Tennessee, when Confederate troops under General Braxton Bragg left the city, which had been undergoing shelling since 21 August. The victory, led by General William Rosecrans, gave U.S. troops greater control of strategic south-central Tennessee.
